What Everyoone Should Know About Student Life

The Daily Telegraph has just published a student poll conducted by Olympus which highlights what students think they should be doing at University.

The list entitled ‘Things to do before leaving University’ includes many archetypical student experiences like arguing with housemates over who should buy the toilet roll; ringing your parents only when you need money; collecting 500 friends on Facebook and spending no more than £10 on a night out.

I could add a whole load of experiences based on my own student days. These include having sex with a woman in her eighties; five legged pub crawls; brewing beer in the bio-chemistry lab and abseiling down the outside of the University building.

These are all typical student experiences. But student life can be fraught with risk. There are many students who actually have vey unhappy or unpleasant times at college or University. Away from home, often for the first time, they can fall prey to unscrupulous landlords and others who are only too keen to relieve them of their limited finances.

Students in some of Britains cities have become targets for bullying, abuse and theft. All students, these days, have loads of expensive gadgets like laptops, mobile phones and mp3 players and these are attractive to local criminal gangs. Student life can be a lot of fun, but these days it can also be fraught with danger. Todays students would do well to take classes in self-defence and avoiding confrontation.

Having fun, making friends and enjoying the freedom of being away from mum and dad are all part of what it is to be a student. But the important thing is to stay safe.
