Tips on getting cheap motorcycle insurance

By Otto On February 6, 2010 Under RV Motorcycle

Insuring your motorcycle is as important as insuring one’s car or any other four vehicles. Damages and accidents can happen to your motorcycle as well and an insured vehicle is always a guarantee of your economical safety.

When buying any product, you should always shop around. The same is true for bike insurance. The internet is a great tool to aid in your search for insurance. There are many companies that offer motorcycle insurance, and you should get numerous quotes to find the best value for the lowest price. However, you should compare the coverage details of the different policies to determine which policy is the best deal for you.

In choosing to ride, you have taken a bold step. This can be a source of inspiration when the time comes to purchase insurance for your motorcycle. You have plenty of choices when it comes to choosing the right insurance agent for you. Who are your friends using to insure their motorcycles? Does the dealer who sold you the bike have any recommendations? Once you decide on the right agent, make sure you are prepared to bargain. Your driving record and experience riding motorcycles will affect your quote and your ability to obtain bike insurance. Get all the details on the policy, but don’t be afraid to ask if there is a cheaper quote. Not every rider will need all of the coverage many companies offer.

There is a direct correlation of insurance prices to the area in which you reside. A highly populous area is statically more prone to accidents due to volume of traffic and people. The amount of commuting you do will also affect your premium. Longer or more frequent travel also increases the chance of an accident or bodily injury. These factors cause your insurance premiums to rise due to the higher probability of an accident or bodily injury. Another factor in insurance prices is the crime rate in the area of residence. A higher theft rate will surely also raise your premium rate. One way to lower you premium is to purchase anti theft devices, such as a bicycle lock or purchasing an additional security system.

Some places it is legal to ride a motorcycle with no license. However, though some people prefer to not have one, a license means insurance companies will look to those that do have one as a more favourable candidate for policies. Another factor to consider is the type of motorcycle you have, faster machines are looked on as more likely to be driven fast and at a higher risk for accidents. If it’s a custom made unique bike, insurance companies think it more likely to be a risk of a damage claim. If being used in a commute for business or work, premiums can be higher due to more time on the road being a high chance of accident, so do use an alternate vehicle for a work commute.

It is important to know whether you have first or third-party insurance so please read over your insurance policy for the answer if you do not know it. If you have first-party insurance coverage the insurance company will cover the price of damage to your body or your bike with a direct payment. First-party coverage does not extend to damage caused to persons other than yourself or another person’s bike. Third-party coverage, however, does extend to other people if they are involved in an accident with you. This means that if you caused another person damage in an accident, the insurance company will pay on your behalf for those damages. Please note that some monetary limits and deductibles apply with either insurance policy.

The variables that have been described so far are too many and it will not be possible to modify all of them to suit your requirements. However, it would be possible to make adjustments in some of them. For instance, you could lower the insurance premium by making sure that you have a good, accident-free record by driving responsibly like an experienced driver.
